Iwata: Piracy “is an endless battle”
Nintendo boss says publisher will pursue technical and legal measures to crack down on software theft. With the PS3 remaining the only current generation console to remain unhacked, platform holder Nintendo – whose DS and Wii remain two of piracy’s largest victims – has admitted that the battle against software piracy “is endless”.
Quote:
“I recognize there is more software piracy, playing downloaded software data without purchase, than some years ago, on many of the current platforms including Nintendo DS,” boss Satoru Iwata stated.
“As for the piracy itself, it is said to be hard to precisely figure out the total impact as it is done underground. But I think I can declare that software piracy impacts all video game platforms today.”
Iwata went on to detail he ways in which Nintendo is attempting to fight the battle.
“As for specific measures, we have two ways – technological and legal measures,” Iwata explained.
“They tend to become a cat-and-mouse chase. As the piracy itself is underground, someone somewhere finds out the solution to evade our measures. When we shut one hole of the mice, they have dug a new one somewhere else.
“We have acknowledged that this is an endless battle, and we believe the best measure is to keep fighting it technologically and legally.
"As for the details of specific measures, I'll refrain from disclosing them here, as this conversation will be public online and the pirates will be able to find. I will however promise to keep acting legally and technologically, with patience.”

I agree with this statement. DS games are easily small in bytes and flashcards are way too cheap. Combine that, with people promoting posts such as "how to play free DS games", I'd say its already impacting the videogame industry...
If Iwata doesn't take drastic measures you'll see developers filing bankruptcy, mainly Nintendo itself since a lot plp preffer quality games such as theirs. All thanks to P2P sharing. Btw anyone who downloads "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" is a complete dumbass show respect dammit, at least to Mario...

They know how to set the prices on the wiishop channel. I paid for the games I wanted came up to $196 excluding World Tour dlc songs.
As R3dfaction said "If Iwata doesn't take drastic measures you'll see developers filing bankruptsy, mainly Nintendo itself"! I thought I heard Nintendo is going to fall one year?

I say **** 'em. Bushing and Team Twiizers gave Nintendo a chance prevent piracy to further take root which they ignored. And now, six months later they come bitching about piracy when it's all to late.
I think it's a miracle some developers haven't abandoned the Wii and DS platform.
It's with the PS3 and '360 the hardcore audience have established themselves as gamers. From my point of view, Nintendo haven't licensed/released a "game" since The Conduit(3rd party) and Super Smash Bros. Brawl(First party).
Personally, I got so sick of Nintendo trying to please a wider range of audience and in the process forgetting it's core that I actually went and bought myself an
Xbox360 because of lack of good games.
It just pisses me off that Nintendo has forgotten all about us, the hardcore gamers.
I don't even use my Wii for gaming any more and it's sad that it has come to this. I don't even bother to even download and try out games since I detest most of them.
Looking forward to the next Legend of Zelda although.
I don't want greater quantity of games, I want greater quality in games.
kthxbye

i dont really think its preventable. no matter what . the most they can do is slow pirates down. and i guess prosecute them at random for rediculus amounts of money, like the music association. but then, i think this will also make people rebel and download more and more. even people who didn't know you could do this sort of thing might get a wii now just for free games... also, i think its far too late to try to stop any thing.. but i am sure they have learned alot from the wii for their next console.. maybe they will coat their next console's main board in plastic to prevent the tweezer attack. lol. at least to me it seems like their first attempt at everything is bad...

Why? All the reviews for NSMBW say it's absolute shite.
My magazine gave it a low 80. That's for a MARIO game, and it's a Nintendo magazine so they're expected to boost the score. They gave Maramusa and DJ Hero and stuff higher marks than it. My brother played it and he says it's awful.
Anyone who DOESN'T download it and "try before they buy" is an idiot. Just because it's Mario doesn't mean it should be an instabuy. I'm not saying don't buy it at all; I'm just saying that maybe this time around playing a couple of levels on a backup before buying it would be wise.
And are you kidding; Nintendo were recently rated the most successful company in the world. Reggie says that the current price tag will never drop further, and the console's been out for 3 years already. They'll never go bankrupt; don't be an idiot.

Ah come on they are still making a shitton of money. If there wasn't any profit in the Wii or DS we wouldn't see so many Devs making games for them. It's that easy.
I have also already seen two moronic statements in this thread already.
1. Why would Nintendo go down because their games are so popular? Ofcourse that does mean that their games get pirated more but overall they sell a looooooot more than any other publisher.
2. If people buy a Wii only to pirate games, how is this hurting anybody? They wouldn't have bought a Wii otherwise, so Nintendo wouldn't have gotten any money from them. Nintendo makes money on every Wii and all the peripherals. So these pirates are actually making Nintendo money!
Nintendo started this war and they are the only ones who can end it. But not by getting all rambo on peoples asses, but by just letting it go.
If you just ignore it it will cost you much less. No money in prevention (for coders etc.) or laywers and the piracy methods will actually never get as popular if you don't constantly bring them in the mainstream news with your crazy stunts.

I agree wholeheartedly - Bushing tried his best to distinguish piracy from homebrew by trying to, as a homebrew developer, to patch a hole left open for pirates. Instead, Nintendo snubbed him and others - they could have listened, but instead they insisted they're just smarter than consumers.
Software companies these days have such patronizing attitudes, like they know better than the rest of the world. Sony is usually the worst, but Nintendo has gone and become "sell outs" in all senses of the word, good and bad.

This is a forum, buddy. A forum is a place to share opinions and discuss, as you know, so yes, you can disprove a person's point, but jeez, don't be such a dick about it!
As for that comment "thanks for letting everyone know you're a pirate." Well golly gee! Haven't you played games on an emulator before? PIRATE PIRATE PIRATE PIRATE!
You neglect to understand that the pirates are a large part of the so-called "homebrew community", and homebrew users are amongst the so-called "hardest of the hardcore" when it comes to gamers. The reason why Nintendo is so successful right now is because they took a big fat dump on the faces of every hardcore gamer that ever loved their games and decided that it would cater to more mainstream markets, where people don't even know what "homebrew" is.
Does this mean I think everyone should pirate Nintendo games? Absolutely not. I don't think anyone should try and infringe on software that took a lot of time, effort, and money to make, but Wii and DS software pirates are not going to kill Nintendo's business - they're not a particularly large group, and they're not even who Nintendo's selling to anymore, so that means Nintendo is not missing their money - they're looking for Grandma's money instead.
In other words, piracy is going to be around whether you like it or not, and if you play emulated games, regardless of what you believe, that software is still copyrighted and you're still a pirate. So quit freaking out and assaulting people angrily. You're wasting valuable energy.

If you're not interested in the kinds of games on the Wii, say so, instead of bashing the Wii and its legitimately great games. Do you like FPS games or third person shooters? Sure, the Wii has only a few good ones, but the Wii has a large amount of great games from other genres.

So, 80 is bad now? Since when? Normally, companies are happy when a game gets an 80 and above.
Also, I played Muramasa, and that game is amazing. Your brother probably isn't interested in that type of game. If you're not interested in FPS's in general, would you go around calling CoD or Halo 3 awful?

Nobody should download and pirate any game for any reason. You don't have to pirate a game to try it. Rent it, play it with a friend, buy it/sell it. Also, why would you be an "idiot" if you don't try before you buy? A score of 80 is a pretty good score, and guarantees a good game. Some people gave it 90.
Also, BACKUP =/= PIRATED GAME. With that mentality, you're going to further the stereotype that everyone with a USB loader pirates games.

The higher-ups and software engineers at Nintendo of Japan probably didn't even hear of Bushing and co. trying to reach them. You can't blame them. Also, the exploit they found has little to do with the current state of piracy on the Wii.

Nintendo published many "hardcore" games, if you're not interested in just first-person shooters and "hardcore" American games. Sin and Punishment 2 is the greatest game I've played on the Wii, and is more hardcore than most games out there now.

Wait. Are you calling Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy, Punch-Out Wii, Mario Galaxy, Excitebots, Another Code R, Excite Truck, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Mario Kart Wii, Twilight Princess, Smash Bros. Brawl, Wii Sports Resort, and Super Paper Mario lack of good games? With Metroid: Other M, Mario Galaxy 2, and the new Zelda, I don't think they forgot about the "hardcore", either.

Once again, the games above by Nintendo alone are great quality, and that's not even all of them. Don't forget all of the exclusive 3rd Party games on the system, either. Xbox 360 and PS3 don't get a lot of exclusives, but the Wii does. If you don't have a Wii, you're missing out.

And no, in NGamer magazine, 80% is a bad score already, and they boosted it because it was Mario. The whole review was really negative. If it weren't Mario it would've been 70% probably. That's terrible in terms of the magazine I get; they're very generous.

That's interesting, because I have 49 gamecube games, 33 wii games, 39 ds games, 21 N64 games, 18 SNES games and 12 GBA games. I've had a 360 for a month now and I already have 8 games for it.
And I know I cannot prove any of this but here's something I CAN prove.
http://steamcommunity.com/id/Alexrose/
There's my Steam account.
134 games.
And that's just Steam, pre-steam I bought 100s of PC games.
I've spent well over 2 grand on just steam games on that account and it's only been active since 30/9/08.
I've been buying games for over 10 years now. And yes, I play demos and I download copies, and if I like it, then I buy it. This game, according to my brother who IS A REVIEWER (indiegames.com) and besides, we are geeks, I've been gaming for over 15 years, he's been gaming for like 17. I trust his opinion as a gamer and he LOVES Mario games and I can tell you this game is not going to be anywhere near the likes of Super Mario World so don't get your hopes up.

Because the recession has already had its worst and the economy's on the slow road to recovery now. If people didn't cut back on games when the recession was actually bad, what makes you think they will now?
"In a report commissioned by Business Week magazine, Nintendo was named the world's number one company. The list was based on the value growth rate and sales growth rate of 2,500 of the world's largest publicly listed companies with sales of more than $10bn, 25% of which came from overseas revenue."
Yeah, they're going to go bankrupt so much.
And also, they're based in Japan. There's no recession there. The only thing the recession impacts is game sales in the west, and they're more than ever for Nintendo. For them, GC was a flop in the west. Now most people have a wii and ds. They're extremely successful, because they're flogging out crap like Wii Fit.
They're NOT going to go bankrupt. Meanwhile they're making games like Wii Music and Wii Fit and this Vitality Sensor thing, chugging out 10s of Mario spinoffs (Olympic games and that crap), and now they finally make a Mario Bros game again and it's unspectacular. They've completely abandoned their old gamer demographic and Nintendo is now a joke to console gamers. I'm loyal to them and I'll always get the good games they bring out but if you think I'm gonna blindly buy everything they release without trying it first, then you're clearly the idiot here.

I believe Nintendo's correct solution would be to open future consoles to homebrew, but block copied games. Obviously the horse is already out of the barn for current systems and there is no putting it back - Nintendo's efforts would be much better spent putting their time & money into the next console.
I don't think the solution (blocking copied games) is really that hard. The PS3 has been pretty successful in this regard. As far as I know, its games still have not been successfully pirated.
The 2nd leg of the solution is opening the console to homebrew. There are plenty of authors that would rather devote their time to making games or porting emulators or just adding functionality. Nintendo should opening embrace such efforts and even consider license agreements. Everyone would win then.
The real problems are greed, arrogance, and ignorance - rarely of the engineers, but of the lawyers and leadership. I am sure that the better engineers would have been open to participating with Tweezers et al. but were blocked by their leadership.

First off Team Twiizers did not offer a solution to stop piracy to Nintendo.
They only offered to help with what they knew but there have been
mulltiple exploits found by people other than TT so it would have happened
regardless.
Secondly, as I've said before, Virtual Console is a joke when emulators
that kick the holy hell out of it exist. Anyone who pays for the bloatware
that is VC is stupid. WIIWARE is a different thing but VC is pointless.
Last but not least, the WII and the DS have the best software library
of any next gen console. All the awesome Mario games. Zelda. WII Sports
series. ETC. - The 360 is garbage for idiots who play EA sports games
and doom clones with "new and improved graphics".
Dual analog controls suck ass. I don't see how they ever caught on,
The WII's control system is revolutionary and both SONY and MICROSLOTH
are trying to copy it because the WII is kicking their ass - Even in spite
of the fact the WII is rampant with piracy! Microsloth is the only company
that has the nerve to charge people for something that should be free
(XBox Live) and then they even police it like the Gestapo.
360 users are mostly idiots who could have fought back and adopted
XLink KAI as a standard but they instead pay monthly bills to a company
that does not deserve it. I would be disgusted to be in that scene.
It's just supporting Microsoft grabbing up everyone else's technology,
watering it down and releasing inferior product.
Video games started going downhill bigtime when they started focusing
more on graphics and so called "realism" more than playability and control.
Nintendo is the only company that fought against this and they ended
up earning back a whole crowd (my crowd, the old school crowd) that
hated so called "next gen" type of games. The 360 can keep it's army
of headset wearing Microsoft supporting war simulator playing kids.
I love and support the WII. I also feel Nintendo is kicking ass with
periphials and this is a genius way of fighting piracy. You have to
buy WII MOTION PLUS, BALANCE BOARD, ETC. - And the original DS,
which is far superior to the DSI or DSILL rocked on the periphial side
as well! Just play Space Invaders Extreme on the DS PADDLE.
The only company that did the smart thing however was SONY.
Since they embraced homebrew by making a Linux compatible
console it still has yet to be hacked. I do not know if this would
be true had they locked everything out, even though it was
crap of them to not let us hit the hardware from Linux.
It's too bad the PS3 didn't take off because it clearly has the
best hardware but again, it's about the SOFTWARE - Not the
hardware! I can thing of NOTHING on PS3 or 360 that I would
want to play yet I can name 10 games easilly off the bat
for WII without even thinking. WII owners represent the old
school crowd who like playability and control over bells and whistles.

Interesting that nintendo makes a big todo about anti-piracy on the eve of their new mario game. It seems they added a new sort of anti-piracy into the new game.

You don't think the solution is "really that hard"? Oh really? Tell that to Sony's other system, the PSP. Sony tried to copy-protect the UMD's around four months or so ago, and about a week later the games were still getting copied as "back ups".
The only thing preventing Blu-Ray piracy from taking off is that it's expensive and it takes way too long to do. Sony's actually pretty awful when it comes to anti-piracy measures - they do things that hurt legitimate users (like putting rootkits on audio cd's) just to prevent their copyrights from being violated, and still pirates circumvent it.
In other words, piracy as we know it is startlingly difficult to fight. It's not a matter of just "blocking" a game. Computers are everywhere now, and people know way more about hacking than they did when the NES was still in the market. These companies need to step their game up.

Piracy tends to take a few forms.
There are the kids who know more than their parents--That cannot ever be helped, They need someone to give them some ethics.
There are disgruntled, middle aged people (and babyboomers) who just know so.
Then there are the people Nintendo just pisses on, aged 23-32, or so.
Piracy is up for one reason: Inter-Industrial Collussion and Price Fixing.
Screw Nintendo's Liscensure: I bet the first unliscenced game outsells anything Nintendo has to offer.
Piracy only hurts software developers.
As for "Technological" measures of prevention, I sure hope Nintendo does not spy on anyone or break the National Security Act of 1947, because, That might be the end of Japan being welcome in America.
On a nice note, The Yen seems to be up, So the prices of games in Japan should be down: Whereas with the dollar tanking, Our games ought to be more expensive.
I bet the Markets tank this coming Monday in response to the Healthcare Bill: This will be one black Christmas.
Oh, and nothing short of Nintendo entering the NES library and Mario to the Public Domain will make me happy--This shit has gone too far, for far too long.
Oh, and People who Pirate WiiWare should be shot like rabbid dogs.
Trip out.

Where's the post that says "Nintendo riped us off back in the NES days. When games were 50-60 bucks. If it wasn't for pirates just think how much they would be charging today." then someone else says "your so wrong, they have to charge more to recoup profit loss".

Wii-Tard, I was not going down that path.
I just think Copyrights should expire when the patents expire.
I just think, The coders deserve the money, Not Nintendo.
I was going down the path, How much money have the Origanol NES teams been given by Nintendo from Virtual Console sales? Certainly not enough.
Oh, I miss the days when Mass Fabrication was the issue, not simple use.
I am also skeptical that a game deserves a copyright: Most games are exactly the same game.
I am also skeptical that code deserves a copyright: Code is a system, it should be patentable.
And Mario is an example of Japanese Racism: Since when can a stereotype be copyrighted and trademarked? By this logic, Disney has a copyright on Emperor Hirohito's likeness and image, since they used it unchallenged in the wonderful cartoon, "Tokio Jokio."
Donkey Kong is King Kong, and King Kong is in the Public Domain: See Nintendo v. UA. King Kong properly translated means, Big Jack Ass Monkey: Nintendo is acting like a big jackass monkey.
I pity Nintendo: It must hurt to go from being the best good guy to a comic book villain overnight. So, don't steal what you can buy.
To steal is always a mortal sin, but, It is a greater sin to put a man in any position to have to steal (such as to feed a starving child.)
I'll say it For the last time: Nintendo promised to bring the arcade home (Homebrew!) They did such a great job, They are reaping the consequences of their own unjust victory. "If it were not for pissed off Arcade Operators and Tech Geeks, There would be no Arcade Emulators."
Nintendo smited the Hardware people by making their own hardware, for the home. This "Endemic and Epic" Piracy is little more than ancient vendetta: To Nintendo's good credit and good name, To fight piracy means they are actually supporting the coders for a change. Corporate Coders are the problem.
But, Nintendo has seriously annoyed its true customer base (Generation Nintendo, 1979-1993.)
I'm saying, Nintendo changed the Norm and Nintendo has to deal with it: The young think of Information much differently than our elders, due entirely to the hard work of Nintendo and Appel in getting technology into the homes.
If you are Chinese, look into www.rom-china.org. What a novel idea: Sovereign Piracy. If you live in America, we censor the internet when it comes to National Security Hazards from China--For better or worse.
Yes, the Chinese Government offers you the opportunity to pirate, a few titles at a time, On the GNU liscence, as amended with Sovereign Capacity, for equal access, for fair use,, of the Chinese, on the sole condition you delete the pirated materials after a fair time, preferably within 24 hours.
How Nifty: I wish I could help end the piracy, But, Nintendo seems to deserve this.
I more wish I could stay on topic, but, I too deserve to be discombobulated.
End of Story: NES Hardware and Donkey Kong are PDed, Nintendo should set an example and embrace their former success.
Think weirdly: Had Sega sold GD-Roms, the Sony CD would have failed. So, by hiding the hardware Sega killed itself? And Nintendo is doing the same thing? And the only ones getting rich on homebrew are the Koreans who make high quality SD cards, usb sticks and harddrives? Well, Duh!
Is not everything as it should be?
Until Triple Layered DVDs are sold, Piracy is not possible: A ROM Dump is not a copy. Young and old do not see eye to eye on the nature of information. They believe in secrets and getting theirs, We don't--Nintendo is suiciding itself because they can't think new.
Wiimote=3 axis hand mouse=Stolen from Patrick Goeshi.

Can you PLEASE stop pressing enter after every single sentence you finish? As I understand, you don't seem to be a native speaker, but please, stop doing that - it makes your posts take up so much space.

"I will however promise to keep acting legally and technologically, with patience"
IE We WILL NOT disable your hardware and cripple your ability to use it just because you want to make backups of your $100 discs.
Ahem, M$, HDD, bastards.
